Estimated annual household cost
$1,100
About $92 a month. Yale's Budget Lab estimates this annual cost for the average U.S. household under current-law tariffs, as of August 24, 2026.
This is a national benchmark for families in Michigan's 89th District, not a district-specific estimate or a tally of costs already paid. Actual costs depend on household purchases. The estimate includes scheduled tariff changes; the monthly equivalent is rounded.

How the costs reach your budget
Imported goods. American-made goods. Higher prices.
An August 2026 New York Fed research paper finds that the 2025 tariffs raised consumer prices for imported and domestically produced goods. Imported inputs become more expensive, and some domestic producers raise prices as foreign competition becomes more costly.
Tariffs add pressure to household budgets. That does not mean they caused every price increase.
